The Garda Siochana Sligo/Leitrim Youth Awards for 2023 were presented in Landmark Hotel, Carrick on Shannon, on Sunday the 8th of October. The Group Award went to Comhairle na nÓg, which includes MCC student Brianna Faughnan, 6th Year.
Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg attended the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Community Awards as they had won the Group Award for their work with MPACT (Moving Parents And Children Together), an addiction service targeted towards children of families suffering with addiction, and they aim to take away the taboo of talking about addiction by connecting families in similar situations. They want to break the cycle.
Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg have been working with them for over a year now, in advising on how to best reach young people in need of the service, this included redesign of flyers and an introduction of QR codes, which can be placed in discreet placed like bathrooms. They’ve given them opportunities to directly reach young people via their AGMs and have advised them on how and who to contact within schools, youth services etc. This is a very long term project that Leitrim Comhairle na nÓg hope will make Leitrim better for the future.
Brianna Faughnan, Sixth Year, is currently chairperson of Leitrim Comhairle.
