School News March 14th 2013.

Formula 1 for schools
The school had an entry in this competition and reached the regional finals in Griffith College Dublin. The challenge was to design and manufacture a model F1 racing car capable of racing on a track. Mr Duffy promoted the project which was carried out by transition year students Daniel Cramp, Eileen Pfeffel, Charlotte Beirne, Fiona Mc Gowan, Claire Rogers and Shannon Cassells.
Second Year boys basketball.
Mohill played St Muredachs College Ballina and had a good win, this takes them to the next stage in the North West competition. Ms Hargaden Ward coaches this team.
U/16 Girls football.
Mohill girls engaged Colaiste Einde Salthill in Ballygar and emerged winners in a hard fought game on a scoreline

Cura visited the school and conducted a workshop/presentation with second years.
Ms Fitzpatrick promoted a Fairtrade awareness campaign in the school that comprised poster making and a sale of Fairtrade products at morning break.
We sympathise with the following who have recently lost a relative.-Ciara and Deirbhile Tiernan on the death of their grandmother Mrs Kathleen Tiernan. Ms Kelly on the death of her uncle Mr Frank Reilly, may they rest in peace.

School Notes March 7th 2013

Seachtain naGaeilge.
Beidh Coláiste Pobail Maothail ag ceiliúradh Seachtain na Gaeilge an tseachtain seo chugainn 11ú – 15ú Márta. Beidh imeachtaí éagsúla ar siúl i rith na seachtaine mar shampla céilí, tráth na gceist and seisiún ceoil. Ta súil ag Roinn na Gaeile go mbaineann gach duine taitneamh agus tairbhe as gach imeacht.

School Tour to Old Trafford
Forty Fifth Year students and a number of teachers attended the Champions League match against Real Madrid last week. The tour also incorporated a visit to a History Museum. The only negative on the tour was the match result.

Enterprise Awards.
Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Gilheaney guided a number of groups within the school towards this competition, held annually in Carrick on Shannon. Four groups from the school qualified, two from Fifth Year and two from Transition Year.
“Medal Masters” was one Fifth Year entry involving Kieran Gilmartin, Traolach O’Driscoll and Colm McHugh. They designed and made wooden plaques to display medals on. The other Fifth Year group sold jewellery from Their “Shambala Collection”, members of this group were Jessica Richards, Clíodhna Reynolds and Shauna McCrann.
A TY group comprising Clara Reid, Sorcha McGwynne, Alice McLoughlin and Lauren Wickham made and sold biscuit cakes.
Eileen Pfeffel, Shannon Cassells, Fiona McGowan and Claire Rogers from TY won third prize overall for their company “Feltit” where they made pictures and frames from felt material.

First Year Boys Football.
Mr. Nolan and the boys travelled to play Strokestown and won on a scoreline – Mohill CC – 3-8 Strokestown – 2-6

Juvenile Boys Football
The boys Juvenile team also played Strokestown and won during the week.

U/14 Girls Football.
The girls played Foxford last week and came out the wrong side in the end.This ends their interest in Connacht competition for this year. Ms. Horan complmented the girls and said many of them have great potential.

Second Year Boys Blitz.
Mr. Duffy went with the boys to Ballymahon with the group that formed two eleven a side teams. Team A played five games winning four and drawing one.
Team B won two, lost two and drew one. The opposition were schools from Longford.

U/16 Girls Football.
Mohill played Carrigallen V.S. in a home game and won. Thanks to Enda Stenson who referred the game.

First and second years played St. Nathys in home games. The First Years performed really well and won their match on a scoreline:

The second year boys found the going tougher and lost by a margin of five points

Religious Education Trip.
Second Year students visited a mosque in Clonskeagh and Greek Orthodox Church in Arbour Hill Dublin as part of their Junior Cert RE Project. Students were given a guided tour and in each case it ended with a question and answer session. Ms. Colum and Ms. Hanly accompanied the students.

Mental Health Awareness.
Senior students will participate in workshops facilitated by Aware and Mental Health Ireland this week. They will also take part in a study skills programme.
Third years will engage with the Samaratins and a study skills workshop

Junk Kouture
Transition Years have progressed to the Western Regional finals in this competition where they design and fabricate costumes from used materials. One groups entry is themed “The Knight” and the other “Miss Universe”. The final is in the Theatre Royal in Castlebar in March 20th. Marks are allocated by online voiting, which is possible between February 25th and March 1st. Ms. Treanor is supporting the work.

Film Competition
The Transition Years are also busy with a Bank of Ireland sponsored short film, promoting Mohill for the gathering. They have most of the project complete with assistance from David Wrynn of Diamonid Water Productions.

Dearbhaile Beirne.

We applaud Dearbhaile, a multitalented athlete, who has been selected on the Ireland U/15 Schools International Soccer Squad for the Bob Doherty Cup, which will take place in Belfast from April 1st to April 4th.
Dearbhaile also plays basketball, gaelic football and is a racewalker. She was awarded the Juvenile 2012 Star Award in Leitrim for her racewalking prowess. The presentations was made by the Minister for Sport in Tullamore.

School Notes February 7th 2013

Leitrim Youth Theatre.
A number of students from the school are involved in the Carrick branch and have recently completed a two night run at “The Dock” with a play called “Heroin Lies” to raise awareness of the dangers of drug use.
Shauna Diffley, Hannah Keegan and Sean McLoughlin took part in this production, directed by Katherine Sheridan and Emily.
They continue to engage in workshops on drama.

First Year Trip.
The First year students were in Dublin last week to visit the “Overseas Aid” offices in O’Connell Street. They took part in a ninety minute workshop on aid to developing countries as part of their CSPE studies. They were accompanied by Ms. Dolan, Mr. Nolan, Ms. Garvey and Ms. Gallagher. By all accounts they got some shopping done also.

We sympathise with Marian Cunningham and Doreen Honeyman on the death of their aunt – Mrs. Betty Reynolds. May she rest in peace.

School Notes January 31st 2013

Mock Examinations.
Junior and Leaving Cert students are in the middle of their exams currently. We wish them well in this dry run.

Transition Year.
The class have had a three day residential at Roscor youth village Beleek for another instalment of the Key programme. The students were involved in outdoor water sports and had mock interviews on their enterprise projects conducted by independent personnel some of whom were from Waterways Ireland. Ms Mc Carville accompanied the students.

First and Second Year girls basketball.
Mohill played Eureka Kells at home in the northeast region of the league. Mohill’s success means they compete at B level and this is very high standard and Moill lost both games.

Sean Kelly, who sat his Leaving Cert in June 2012, is receiving an award and bursary from DCU for his results attained at Leaving Cert.
Dara McKiernan, a fifth year student, has received his award from the Business School in UCG for his exceptional marks in Junior Cert Business Studies.

Healthy Schools Committee
This group of students and their guiding teachers – Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Hanley, are preparing for “Healthy School Week” which begins on February 24th, with a theme this year of Positive Mental Wellbeing. The committee is comprised of students from each year group, except sixth year.

Chemistry in Maynooth.
Twelve Leaving Cert Chemistry students visited Maynooth chemistry laboratories to carry out practical work from the syllabus, it was a good opportunity to review and revise ahead of the upcoming mock exams. Ms Nertney accompanied the students.

Senior Boys Football.
Mohill played Carrick C.S. in Gortletteragh during last week and had a bad day at the office, Mohill underperformed and were missing a number of first team members before the game and ended up having to play with fourteen players for much of the second half due to lack of numbers. Mr Beirne is in charge of this team.

This programme funded by Peace 3 and facilitated by people who have experienced the troubles in Northern Ireland continues with Fifth Years and Transition Year students. The programme is being delivered to second level schools in Leitrim.

BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The school has two entries in this year’s exhibition. The first entry titled Appreciating Women – in “The times we live in” was developed by Sixth Year students, Patricia Forde, Niamh McHugh and Niamh McKiernan – Ms. Duffy is the support teacher.

Fifth year students Eimear Higgins, Alice Tuthill and Jasmine Reynolds have a project titled “Can music influence our mood” – here the support teacher is Ms. Muldowney. Both projects are entered in the Social and Behavioural Science Category. We wish them well after all their hard work.

Credit Union Poster Competition.
School students Jessica Dobson, Laura O’Neill and Wiktoria Fangor won first, second and third prize respectively in the 14 – 17 year category in the local competition. Well done to you all.

Eveving Study.
Evening study continues from 4.30 to 6.30 – Monday to Thursday for exam year students.

Maynooth Trip.
Thirty four Leaving Certy Biology students spent a day in the Biology Laboratories in NUIM revising mandatory practicals from the course. The students were accompanied by Ms. Nertney and Mr. McHugh.
