The Helix
The Higher Level Fifth Year English class travelled to the Helix in Dublin for a stage production of Macbeth. They were impressed with the performance and stagecraft. They were accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Yorke and Ms. Dolan.

This programme is running after school for First and Second Years one evening a week. The activities include Hip Hop and Boxercise. The programme is organised by Ms. Purcell and Ms. McCarville.

A number of positions have already been filled – Ann Maguire and John Boyle represent First Years. Currently elections are taking place for two parents for Transition Year and a mother to represent Third Year. The complete list will be published in the school website later.

Mental Health Workshop
A group of senior cycle students travelled to Sligo to participate in this eventful and informative day. A variety of speakers addressed the group – Maureen Griffin, a Forensic Psychologist, spoke on Cyber Bullying, Clair Swinburne author of “So what do you think” a guide for the teenage mind gave a presentation on the benefits of positive thinking. Ann Marie from Today FM and Wally the Rapper gave an enlightening account of Wally’s recovery from depression. Spun out – a mental health organisation and Lough Allen Students, who have won the Mental Health National Public Speaking, both delivered presentations on Minding Our Mental Health. Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Hanly accompanied the students.

Peace and Reconciliation Programme (Green Hat)
Fifth Years and Transition Years are engaging in this twenty hour programme that involves visits from guest speakers who had first hand experience of living through this traumatic period. Workshops will raise awareness about the extent of the troubles in Northern Ireland and the continuation of peace initiatives throughout the six counties.

Where have you Bin.
This is a project jointly promoted by Leitrim County Council and i radio to heighten awareness of litter. i radio claim they have personnel visiting towns and villages undercover and anyone spotted putting litter in a bin is set to win €100.

Boys Basketball.
The U/16 and U/19 basketballers played St. Muredach’s College, Ballina at home. The U/19’s lost by a a narrow margin while the U/16’s had a handsome win. Ms. Hargaden Ward says the U/16’s have a good chance of reaching the Regional Finals.

Congratulations.
Dearbhaile Beirne has represented Connacht in an Inter provincial Soccer Tournament in Athlone. Dearbhaile will now attend further trials in the coming months with a view to representing Ireland in the sport. .

Mohill CC Equestrian Team.
The Equestrian team have been nominated for Juvenile Team of the Year in Leitrim Sports Star Awards. They are worthy nominees for the award

Caroline Moran and Karen Roche have qualified for a UCD Entrance Scholars Award on foot of their Leaving Certificate performance. Caroline had previously been granted the M.J. McManus Award and Karen a Naughton Scholarship. Congratulations to them both.

Funding for the Sports Field.
We welcome the €80,000 sanctioned by the DES for the development of a football pitch on the school grounds. We wish to thank all those who made the granting of this money possible.

First Year Boys Football Blitz
Mr. Kehir took the First Years to Ballinamore to play in the Brady Cup Blitz. The group were split into two teams, one of which got beaten in the final. They competed against teams from Manorhamilton, Carrigallen, Ballinamore, Carrick on Shannon and Drumshanbo.

Vietnamese Orphanages.
A number of students have supported this cause by selling wristbands – the money raised is going to support a volunteer worker, who will visit Vietnan in the coming months.

Halloween Soccer.
The annual student v teacher soccer game will take place before mid term in the Sports Hall – while the students are in prime condition the physios and chiropractors are busy trying to patch the teachers together.

Cyberbullying.
The school is facilitating a talk for parents on this topic. It is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th at 8.00 pm. This will be followed the next day by a workshop for all First Year students on the topic. It is hoped to roll out the programme for other year groups at a later date.

JP Mc Manus Scholarship.
Congratulations to Caroline Moran who completed her Leaving Cert in June on winning this prestigious award, on the basis of her overall level of attainment in the examinations. The award ceremony is in the University of Limerick in November and the guest of honour is Bill Clinton.We are proud of your achievements Caroline and wish you the best in your studies and in the years ahead.

The school Mass for the start of the year took place in the parish church on Friday week last, it was concelebrated by Fr Murphy and Fr Burke. The theme was “Happiness” and students had displays around the church of the things in life that make them happy. The students were involved in many aspects of the celebration and added much to the ceremony. Thanks to Fr Burke and Fr Murphy and to all who helped out in preparation and on the day.

Floral Pride Award
Congratulations to the Autism class and helpers who were awarded third prize in the competition. The award is a fitting reward for all the hard work they put in resulting in the colourful displays on show all year round.

Geography Field Trip.
Mr. Kehir accompanied the Leaving Cert Geography class to Killukin River, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. The primary focus was on river erosion and that entailed plenty of measurement and sampling at the site.

First Year students attended a workshop facilitated by Wrigleys to track pupils knowledge and raise awareness of how to dispose of used chewing gum. The workshop used role play and activity based learning.

Transition Year
The group had a most enjoyable and busy two and a half day trip to Roscor Youth Village Fermanagh. They had Key Training on Enterprise and setting up a mini company, they also had team building exercises as well as many outdoor pursuits including gorge walking in wet suits followed by orienteering, and a low rope obstacle course.
