A group of Transition Year and Fifth Year students from the Agricultural Science class went on a farm visit last week. We went to a local dairy farm in Bornacoola for an hour. On arrival to the farm we were welcomed by Mr. Joe Devine. He brought us into the calf shed, where he rears his weaned calves on powdered milk for approximately 14 weeks. He also explained the value of a Holstein Friesian calf and how price may differ between male and female. We also visited the milking parlour where he explained the need for high levels of cleanliness. He explained that it takes him approximately one hour and a half to milk and he does this twice daily. We learned that producing quality milk involves monitoring somatic cell court and total bacteria count. We also got to view his milking cows that were Holstein Friesians. Mr. Devine also emphasised how important it was to keep the housing facilities clean and showed us his automatic yard scraper in use. He also does his own A.I. and has an Angus stock bull as well. I would like to thank our teacher – Ms. Kelly and Mr. Devine for facilitating the farm visit. Shauna Diffley.
Cian Mallon, a second year student, won €100 towards a scholarship to Coláiste Cholumba. Maith an fear Cian.
