Healthy Schools Committee
This group of students and their guiding teachers – Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Hanley, are preparing for “Healthy School Week” which begins on February 24th, with a theme this year of Positive Mental Wellbeing. The committee is comprised of students from each year group, except sixth year.

Chemistry in Maynooth.
Twelve Leaving Cert Chemistry students visited Maynooth chemistry laboratories to carry out practical work from the syllabus, it was a good opportunity to review and revise ahead of the upcoming mock exams. Ms Nertney accompanied the students.

Senior Boys Football.
Mohill played Carrick C.S. in Gortletteragh during last week and had a bad day at the office, Mohill underperformed and were missing a number of first team members before the game and ended up having to play with fourteen players for much of the second half due to lack of numbers. Mr Beirne is in charge of this team.

This programme funded by Peace 3 and facilitated by people who have experienced the troubles in Northern Ireland continues with Fifth Years and Transition Year students. The programme is being delivered to second level schools in Leitrim.

BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The school has two entries in this year’s exhibition. The first entry titled Appreciating Women – in “The times we live in” was developed by Sixth Year students, Patricia Forde, Niamh McHugh and Niamh McKiernan – Ms. Duffy is the support teacher.

Fifth year students Eimear Higgins, Alice Tuthill and Jasmine Reynolds have a project titled “Can music influence our mood” – here the support teacher is Ms. Muldowney. Both projects are entered in the Social and Behavioural Science Category. We wish them well after all their hard work.

Credit Union Poster Competition.
School students Jessica Dobson, Laura O’Neill and Wiktoria Fangor won first, second and third prize respectively in the 14 – 17 year category in the local competition. Well done to you all.

Eveving Study.
Evening study continues from 4.30 to 6.30 – Monday to Thursday for exam year students.

Maynooth Trip.
Thirty four Leaving Certy Biology students spent a day in the Biology Laboratories in NUIM revising mandatory practicals from the course. The students were accompanied by Ms. Nertney and Mr. McHugh.

U/16 Boys Basketball.
The boys play the North West Final against tough opposition in St. Nathy’s, Ballaghadereen at a Sligo venue. Ms. Hargaden Ward coaches this team. We wish them well.

Autism Class.
The Autism class had a trip to Dublin to see the musical Oliver in the Bord Gais Theatre. They were accompanied by Ms, Murphy, Ms. Cunningham and Ms. Conway.

Transition Year Project.
Mr. Duffy has enabled two groups within TY to enter a competition called Formula One for Schools, where they make a five page submission initially regarding their design for a working Formula One model car. One group has reached the last one hundred and will be further assessed in March in Griffith College Dublin. Well done to all.

Galway Trip.
A group of six third year students accompanied by Ms. Earley and Ms. Gallagher visited Galway where they saw the Atlantaquarium and did some shopping. They were joined by students from Drumshanbo V.S. and Lough Allen College. The funding for the trip was provided by Leitrim Developement Company.

Transition Year.
Ms. Reynolds took the group to the cinema in Carrick to see “Seven Psychopaths” with a view to adding to their Film Studies Portfolio for Leaving Cert.

Mindout.
Ms. Hanley, Ms. Colum, Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Hargaden Ward attended a day long seminar on Mental Health in Sligo. It was delivered by the Health Promotion Unit of the HSE

School News December 6th 2012Congratulations.

Congratulations.
We have reason to celebrate the awards bestowed on members of our student body by Leitrim Sports Partnership. The School Equestrian Team comprising Mollie Crossley, Shauna McCrann, Paul Foy and Cian Wrynn scooped the Juvenile Team of the Year Award.
Dearbhaile Beirne won the Junior Sports Star Award for her endeavours in many sports.
We applaud the winners, their parents and mentors, who have made this possible.

School Inspection.
The school has just had a Management Leadership and Learning inspection conducted by DES inspectors over three days last week. The inspection report will be published on the DES website in a few months time.

Romeo & Juliet
Third Year Higher Level English classes attended the Backstage Theatre, Longford for a viewing of Shakespeare’s famous play. They enjoyed the production and were accompanied by Ms. Reynolds and Ms. Dolan.

Christmas.
There will be a Christmas Carol Service in the School on Friday, 21st December..

Christmas Confessions.
This will be held in the school on Thursday, 13th December and will be conducted by some of the local priests.

Transition Year.
The TY’s have had their second residential in the Key Programme, this time in Roscor Beleek, Co. Fermanagh,where they stayed three days The focus is on careers and CV preparation, interspersed with outdoor activities. Mr Conor Beirne accompanied the students.
They are also engaged in an “Intergenerational Programme” with daycare patients in Arus Carolan. The purpose of the programme is to raise their awareness of the elderly in their community – part of their interaction involves helping the people draw cottages on slate.

Daire McKiernan.
We congratulate Daire, who has been invited to an Award Ceremony in NUI, Galway, based on his performance in Business Studies in Junior Cert – Daire is now in Fifth Year.

The Helix
The Higher Level Fifth Year English class travelled to the Helix in Dublin for a stage production of Macbeth. They were impressed with the performance and stagecraft. They were accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Yorke and Ms. Dolan.
New Arrival
Congratulations to Ms. McGovern and her husband on the birth of their daughter, Ella.
Girls Active
This programme is running after school for First and Second Years one evening a week. The activities include Hip Hop and Boxercise. The programme is organised by Ms. Purcell and Ms. McCarville.
Girls Basketball.
The U/16 and U/19 teams played Scoil Mhuire, Longford away – the U/19’s won on a scoreline of Mohill CC 51 – Scoil Mhuire 28.
The U/16’s were beaten by a small margin.

A number of positions have already been filled – Ann Maguire and John Boyle represent First Years. Currently elections are taking place for two parents for Transition Year and a mother to represent Third Year. The complete list will be published in the school website later.

School Notes November 15th 2012

Mental Health Workshop
A group of senior cycle students travelled to Sligo to participate in this eventful and informative day. A variety of speakers addressed the group – Maureen Griffin, a Forensic Psychologist, spoke on Cyber Bullying, Clair Swinburne author of “So what do you think” a guide for the teenage mind gave a presentation on the benefits of positive thinking. Ann Marie from Today FM and Wally the Rapper gave an enlightening account of Wally’s recovery from depression. Spun out – a mental health organisation and Lough Allen Students, who have won the Mental Health National Public Speaking, both delivered presentations on Minding Our Mental Health. Ms. Kellegher and Ms. Hanly accompanied the students.

Peace and Reconciliation Programme (Green Hat)
Fifth Years and Transition Years are engaging in this twenty hour programme that involves visits from guest speakers who had first hand experience of living through this traumatic period. Workshops will raise awareness about the extent of the troubles in Northern Ireland and the continuation of peace initiatives throughout the six counties.

Where have you Bin.
This is a project jointly promoted by Leitrim County Council and i radio to heighten awareness of litter. i radio claim they have personnel visiting towns and villages undercover and anyone spotted putting litter in a bin is set to win €100.

Boys Basketball.
The U/16 and U/19 basketballers played St. Muredach’s College, Ballina at home. The U/19’s lost by a a narrow margin while the U/16’s had a handsome win. Ms. Hargaden Ward says the U/16’s have a good chance of reaching the Regional Finals.

Congratulations.
Dearbhaile Beirne has represented Connacht in an Inter provincial Soccer Tournament in Athlone. Dearbhaile will now attend further trials in the coming months with a view to representing Ireland in the sport. .

The Equestrian team have been nominated for Juvenile Team of the Year in Leitrim Sports Star Awards. They are worthy nominees for the award
